We've been getting our servers updated to Claris FileMaker Server 19.4.2 recently and noticed an aspect of the install that it might help others to be aware of. We were using the built in FMWebSite that FileMaker Server installs to allow downloads of an IPA file for testing on a mobile device. This requires defining a couple of custom MIME types in the web server configuration, .plist and .ipa. The FMS installer appears to overwrite the FMWebSite configuration, at least on Windows, and reset the MIME types to the defaults, removing the .ipa and .plist entries we'd created.
In September of 2018 we were excited to offer the Map Widget, a FileMaker solution that provided you with the ability to display your FileMaker data as locations on a Google Map, using the Google Maps clustering functionality. Implementation was easy and didn’t require in-depth knowledge of the Google Maps API. Today we are announcing that we are now offering the Map Widget fully unlocked and free of charge!
Through thirty years of Claris FileMaker and web app development, we’ve always found it essential to keep learning and searching, to continue asking the questions and exploring the bounds of what our chosen software platforms can do and accomplish. With the wealth of information to find and review, along with new technologies and updates to keep track of, staying on top of the latest and greatest can seem a daunting task.
It’s been three weeks since John Newhoff and I attended PauseOnError and I’m still unpacking from the experience (literally and figuratively). Not only did I have the opportunity to take part in some great sessions, the amount of knowledge gained from others in the FileMaker community is invaluable.
For-hire developers are groups or individuals who primarily solve problems for other businesses that are not their own. Every developer must address a problem. Each type of development has its strengths and weaknesses.
This year marks the second virtual Claris Engage, a conference formerly known as DevCon, and widely attended by FileMaker developers, near and far. I’ve attended many of the events already and below is a short recap of what we’ve seen so far, and what we have to look forward to in the future.
